Update: Power restored to village as search for outage cause continues

Update: 10:09 p.m.: All power was back on in Greenport Village as of 6:30 p.m, according to Mayor George Hubbard. But some confusion exists as to where the problem started on Sunday, leaving the village without power all afternoon and causing many businesses to shut their doors entirely.

The mayor said a PSEG breaker tripped and shut off power in Greenport and PSEG had to switch lines to the village power plant.

“I don’t know what caused it yet,” Hubbard said. “Our crew and theirs will investigate tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, Kristina Pappas, media rep for PSEG, said the problem that caused Greenport to trip was on Greenport’s side.

All of PSEG Long Island’s side, she said was up and running. “It’s not an issue with any of our equipment,” she said.

Original story: Residents and business owners felt the heat during today’s sunny, steamy temps as a power outage left Greenport village without air conditioners and refrigeration all afternoon.

According to Greenport Village Mayor George Hubbard, the power went out at approximately 1:50 p.m., when a PSEG power supply line that feeds the village “tripped out” in Southold.

“It knocked out the power,” he said. “They’re trying to correct the issue.”

Greenport’s Doug Jacobs, who works at the plant, was in the area when the lights went out and was over at the power facility even before Hubbard could text him, he said.

Right now, work is ongoing on a backup line. “Our guys are going to start powering our six feeders slowly,” Hubbard said. “They’re going to start powering them up one at time, slowly, because if they do it all at once, with all the ACs, they’ll overload the circuits and it will burn out the backup line.” The mayor said he hoped the power would be restored within the next hour or two.
PSEG did not immediately return a request for comment.
