Lights back on in East Marion after localized outage this afternoon

A localized power outage in East Marion centered around Rocky Point Road was caused by heat, according to PSEG representatives said.

The outage, according to neighbors, began at approximately 6 p.m. and last an hour and a half.

PSEG media rep Elizabeth Flagler said localized outages are sparked by the summer’s hot temps.

The outage follows a loss of power across Greenport yesterday that forced many village businesses, without air conditioning or refrigeration, to close their doors.

The outage in Greenport was caused, according to an explanation on the village website, by failure of transformer #1. “The exact cause of the failure of transformer #1 will be investigated and necessary repairs will be performed as soon as possible,” Greenport Village Administrator Paul Pallas wrote.

All power was back on in Greenport Village yesterday as of 6:30 p.m, according to Mayor George Hubbard. But some confusion existed as to where the problem started on Sunday.

The mayor said a PSEG breaker tripped and shut off power in Greenport and PSEG had to switch lines to the village power plant.

Meanwhile, Kristina Pappas, media rep for PSEG, said the problem that caused Greenport to trip was on Greenport’s side.

All of PSEG Long Island’s side, she said was up and running. “It’s not an issue with any of our equipment,” she said.

According to Hubbard, the power went out at approximately 1:50 p.m., when a PSEG power supply line that feeds the village “tripped out” in Southold.

“It knocked out the power,” he said.

Greenport’s Doug Jacobs, who works at the plant, was in the area when the lights went out and was over at the power facility even before Hubbard could text him, he said.
