Photos: North Fork hit hard by sudden fierce storm

The community is still cleaning up after fierce storm hit the North Fork this morning, leading to downed trees and power lines, as well as widespread outages.

Southold Town Highway Superintendent Vincent Orlando said a wide swath of trees are down from Mattituck to Greenport. “East of that seems to have missed the brunt of the storm,” he said.

Town highway crews have been out all day cutting up large trees and branches and moving them to the side of the road, he said. Tomorrow, they’ll be back to begin picking up the piles of debris.

“There are also downed trees and branches that are in the electrical wires; that, PSEG will have to do,” Orlando said.

With 4,800 customers without power this morning in Southold Town, PSEG said this afternoon that delays are to be expected in regard to power restoration. Many residents on Main Bayview Road, as well as other parts of town, remain without power or air conditioning.
