Parents working together can help make a child’s educational experience even richer.
That’s what Kim Moore, incoming Greenport Elementary School PTA president, believes, and she’s gearing up for a full year of activities aimed to help families become engaged in their children’s education.
Moore will host a summer meeting of the PTA tomorrow at 6 p.m. at 321 4th Avenue in Greenport.
“The more people that join, the more awesome things we can do for our kids,” she said.
Moore decided to hold a summer meeting because she said the hope is to regroup and reorganize before the year takes off.
“It’s also a great opportunity to get together before the hustle and bustle of the year begins. We’ll have a chance to meet other parents and our kids, who are invited of course, can have a chance to play,” she said.
Upcoming events include the Pre-K ice cream social for incoming Pre-K students to get to know their teachers and other staff; that event takes place on Aug. 26 at 3:30 p.m. at the school. In addition, the 7th grade orientation takes place on Sept. 2 from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., also at the school.
A craft fair will be held on the front lawn of Greenport Schools on Sept. 5; booths are available for $50 for friends of the PTA. Following will be a Halloween parade, Moore said.
Moore’s enthusiastic about taking over the reins. “We are a small town that is capable of great things. I know, ’cause I’ve seen firsthand what Greenport can do. If parents can just give us a little time and effort, we can provide our kids with some fun and cool activities and events to reward them for their hard work. Our kids today are under so much pressure to perform, we sometimes forget that they are kids and that they need to have fun, too,” she said.
