Southold ZBA to weigh in on Southold Farm + Cellar issue at special meeting

Supporters are gearing up to turn out once again at a special meeting scheduled for today to discuss the Meadors, a young couple whose tasting room was shut down earlier this season after Southold Town said they were operating without the proper permits.

The special meeting is slated to take place today at 5 p.m. at the Southold Town annex at the Capital One building on Youngs Avenue, with the zoning board potentially taking action to close the public hearing.

Southold Town Chief Building Inspector Mike Verity said the property, located at 860 Old North Road in Southold, only has a certificate of occupancy for a single family dwelling, but a winery and tasting room, Southold Farm + Cellar, had been operating on-site since last year.

A crowd showed up at a zoning board of appeals hearing earlier this month, voicing their support for Regan and Carey Meador, who, they said, represent to many the future of small farming in Southold.

The Meadors are seeking variances from the ZBA to convert an existing building to a tasting room, and construction of a new winery building at less than the code required minimum of 100 feet from a major road, and a winery building on a parcel on less than the code-required 10 acres.

Also under review are rear yard setbacks.

A Facebook page has been created in support of the Meadors; a shout out has asked friends, neighbors and supporters to turn out for today’s special meeting.
