Chief: Morning fire sparked by electric charger

Updated: 11:44 a.m.: First responders were called to the scene of a home in Southold this morning for a fire caused by the charger to an electric boat, Southold Fire Chief Peggy Killian said.

Killian said a woman was home and threw a wet towel on the flames, “knocking down” the fire, which burned the sheetrock in the wall and the floor.

“It was a good thing she was home. It was hot. She could have lost her house,” Killian said.

Killian said the fire serves as a reminder that any electric chargers should be unplugged.

The homeowner, Killian added, “helped us greatly. She did a great job.”

Original story: The call for a house fire came in at 9:06 a.m. for a home on Pine Neck Road, according to the Southold Fire Department.

Officials said an initial call for mutual aid was canceled and it did not appear there was any serious damage or any injuries.
