Two days ago when Mattituck defeated Southampton 5-1, Tuckers head coach Malynda Nichol didn’t feel like her team played a complete game.
“We didn’t play hard to the finish,” Nichol said. “We lost all our focus in the second half. That was our goal today to play a full game.”
It’s hard to argue that they didn’t.
Mattituck (7-4-1) put up a ridiculous nine goals in a 9-1 stomping of the Southampton Mariners at Mattituck High School on Thursday.
Jane DiGregorio led the way with a hat-trick, recording three goals and Alex Beebe and Alya Ayoub chipped in two a piece. Also scoring goals were Amber Rochon and Catherine Hayes.
It was Hayes’ first game back after suffering a concussion.
“We had great combination play today from the middle, the flanks, the back,” Nichol said. “It’s a great game to have going into our final three games of the season.”
The three teams remaining on the schedule are Center Moriches (9-1-1), Babylon (9-2-1) and Southold/Greenport (4-6-1).
After graduating six starters last year, it seemed as if it would be a rebuilding year for the Tuckers but they flat out compete every game.
“This is the best attack I’ve had coaching here,” Nichol said. “We might be young but the talent is there.”
The Tuckers will face Southold/Greenport next on Saturday for a noon start in Mattituck.
