Greenport’s rich whaling legacy will come alive at Brecknock Hall as rare artifacts are unveiled next month.

Whaling curator Michael P. Dyer will shed light on David G. Floyd’s illustrious whaling career in the next installment of an annual lecture series presented by the Brecknock Hall Foundation.

The lecture, “Tuthill’s Memorial: Tragedy and Triumph in Greenport’s Whaling Heyday, 1833 to 1860”, will take place at the Peconic Landing Community Center on Saturday, November 14, at 3 p.m.

The event is free.

A highlight of the presentation will be the unveiling of newly acquired and never-before-seen artifacts that serve as a living representation of Floyd’s journey to Greenport, including log books from the whaling ships “Italy” and “Prudent”, which were owned by Floyd.

The exhibit will be on display at Brecknock Hall following the lecture. Transportation will be provided to and from the exhibit.

Dyer, a career whaling historian and maritime curator, currently serves as senior maritime historian at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. He has been working with maritime collections in museums since 1988 and is a frequent author and presenter on topics of American whaling history.

During the lecture, he will present highlights from the New Bedford Whaling Museum collection as well as extracts about Greenport’s whaling history from his current book, “The Art of the Yankee Whale Hunt.”

The exhibit is offered in a partnership by the Southold Historical Society, the Brecknock Hall Foundation and Peconic Landing, with support from a private donor. The Oysterponds Historical Society and Suffolk County Historical Society also contributed to the exhibit.

Members of the public who wish to attend should RSVP by going to www.peconiclanding.ticketleap.com or calling 631-477-3800.

The newly acquired artifacts from the Floyd Estate will be on display at Brecknock Hall through December 12. To schedule a private tour contact Ted Webb at (631) 235-8681.
