Boys Soccer: Southold finishes season undefeated for first time since 1979

There hasn’t been a team in Southold’s soccer history that finished the regular season undefeated in division play since 1979. That all changed on Tuesday at Southold High School.

The First Settlers (10-0 League VIII, 13-2-1 overall) took down Stony Brook, 2-1 behind two goals by Joey Worysz.

In a chippy affair that had one player leave the game and potentially seek more medical attention, Worysz crushed a goal from 18 feet out to seal the deal in the second half after Stony Brook (6-4 League VIII) had tied it.

“It was a hard-fought game,” Settlers head coach Andrew Sadowski said. “The most important part of it all was that we came away winners and undefeated league champs.”

It’s been a season of great success. But Sadowski can’t say that it’s his best team he’s ever coached just yet.

“That kind of question is an unfair question because every team is different,” Sadowski said. “Do they have qualities of some teams that went deep in the playoffs? Yes I think they do.”

Because success is nothing new to Southold soccer since Sadowski took over the helm. He recorded his 100th victory earlier this season.

“I have as much passion for the game as they do,” Sadowski said. “The game’s been real good to me. They work hard, I work hard. We work on improving as the season progresses. We move players around when needed. It’s without a doubt a group effort.”

So what’s it going to take to win states?

“We’re going back to square one tomorrow,” Sadowski said. “We’re going back to the basics and we’ll see where their effort’s going to be.”
