Football: Greenport falls to Port Jefferson on homecoming night, 22-0

A game that started poorly finished that way as the Greenport/Southold/Mattituck Porters didn’t give their homecoming crowd much to cheer about.

The stands were packed and spectators were piled along the fence, eager to see a victory that could etch their home team’s name into the playoffs.

But after surrendering a safety and touchdown in the first half, the Greenport offense had no answers and couldn’t move the ball effectively against a strong Port Jefferson defense on Friday night.

The second half was no different. More points for Port Jefferson and no answer for Greenport which ultimately led to a 22-0 defeat at Coach Dorrie Jackson Memorial Field.

After starting the season 3-1, Greenport (3-4 Division IV) lost their third consecutive game. The power rankings system may not play in their favor after this loss.

Port Jefferson (4-3 Division IV) distanced themselves from Greenport with the win. They ran and ran and ran away with the victory, leaving the home fans not only cold because of the incoming winter weather but disappointed as a promising season may have met its bitter end.

Greenport/Southold/Mattituck will finish its season against McGann-Mercy next Friday.
