Fouchet scores two as Southold wins county title, 2-0 over Pierson

Three years, three Suffolk County Class C titles.

It’s nothing new to Peter Fouchet and Joey Worysz who’ve been on each of the last three championship teams.

Seniors now, it’s their time for the limelight.

“To be honest, I really thought this year would be a rebuilding year,” Fouchet said. “I didn’t expect any of this.”

Whether it was expected or not, the Settlers produced an undefeated season and beat Pierson/Bridgehampton, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon for the Suffolk County crown at Diamond in the Pines in Coram.

It was scoreless for the first 65 minutes of the game, something that Southold was unaccustomed to throughout the season.

“The first half wasn’t anywhere near what they’re capable of playing,” Settlers head coach Andrew Sadowski said. “But they fought through it and that’s what you have to do in this part of the season.”

At halftime, Sadowski was adamant in getting his team to up their play. He called on certain players to step their game up.

Though the level of play rose, it was only until 15 minutes left in the game when Worysz found a streaking Fouchet who knocked it past the goal keeper to the upper right corner from outside the box.

It was a huge weight off the shoulders of the team as they could look up at the scoreboard and see, 1-0.

“It felt pretty good,” Fouchet said. “My buddy Joey hit me with that nice through ball on the dime and it was nice to be able to capitalize.”

They’ve been a tag team duo all season.

“Joey scored 13 goals and Peter scored 17 goals this season,” Sadowski said. “It honestly speaks for itself the amount of work they put in.”

And just for insurance, Worysz found Fouchet again off a free kick from 20 yards out that was buried in the back of the net on a header. Worysz was the first to congratulate him following the goal.

“We’ve known each other ever since we were like what,” Worysz said, looking at Fouchet. “One years old?”

“It doesn’t matter who scores,” Worysz said. “As long as we win.”

With the victory, Southold (14-2-1) advance to the Southeast Regional since there is no Class C representative for Nassau County. They’ll face Section I champion Solomon Schechter at Lakeland High School this Wednesday at 5 p.m.

“They know that no matter who we draw it’s not going to be easy,” Sadowski said.

“We know what the atmosphere’s going to be like,” Fouchet said. “And we know it’s going to be cold. So we have to be ready in mind and body.”
