Greenport Village rang in the holiday season in Mitchell Park last night with caroling, a tree-lighting, a visit from Santa and free rides on the carousel.
The tall evergreen now standing in the harborfront park grew up behind the Greenport firehouse, Mayor George Hubbard Jr. told the crowd gathered for yesterday’s festivities. He led a countdown to the moment that drew the village out into the crisp night air and the giant tree was suddenly illuminated with thousands of tiny white lights.
The Greenport Fire Department’s vintage 1933 fire truck — decked out in lights, candy canes and stockings — brought Santa to the park for a visit with wide-eyed children. They crowded around him on the sidewalk, where he patiently listened to their Christmas wishes and posed for photos.
A credible source informs SoutholdLOCAL that Santa may well make a special appearance at the Greenport Fire Department Annual Christmas Parade tomorrow. The parade steps off at 1 p.m. from the school, continues east on Front Street then turn right onto Main Street. The parade will continue as far as Hommels then head down South Street to the firehouse. Check back for news and photos from tomorrow’s event.
