Tractor-trailer moving heavy highway equipment bottoms out, gets stuck attempting to turn onto North Road

A mishap involving a tractor-trailer carrying heavy equipment has had Chapel Lane at North Road in Greenport closed since about noon.

The tractor-trailer, hauling a piece of highway equipment, bottomed out and became stuck on the roadway as the truck driver attempted to turn west onto North Road from Chapel Lane.

North Road itself has been briefly and intermittently closed by police to allow the truck driver to attempt to maneuver the vehicle out of the intersection. Westbound traffic was diverted down Moore’s Lane.

It wouldn’t budge.

Eventually, the driver and police removed the equipment from the trailer, which allowed the trailer to move again.

Eastbound traffic was allowed to pass around the stuck truck while it blocked a portion of the roadway, but traffic was temporarily snarled as the driver and emergency responders worked to get the truck out of the jam.
