Cutchogue, Mattituck firefighters rescue three stranded boaters Sunday night

Cutchogue and Mattituck fire departments rescued three people stranded on a boat that ran aground on a sandbar at Robins Island last night.

Southold Town Police said a 20-foot center console boat operated by Joshua Hagerty of Southold and ran aground on the sandbar, stranding himself and Anthony Ellis, 29, of Mattituck and Gina Bruswitz, 25, of Riverhead.

A distress call was made to police at 8:38 p.m., according to a police press release issued early this morning.

Cutchogue and Mattituck firefighters responded with their rescue boats, launching from the New Suffolk boat ramp, to retrieve the stranded boaters. All three people were safely transported back to the New Suffolk ramp.

Bruswitz and Ellis were transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of hypothermia, police said. Haggerty refused medical attention.
