Police have arrested the man who left the scene of a single-car accident on Sound Avenue and Aldrich Lane in Laurel yesterday morning.

Police said Robin L. Richards, 71, of Mattituck left the scene of the crash because he had a suspended license since 2005. He was located two miles away from the scene.

Richards was operating a pickup truck westbound on Sound Avenue shortly after 7 a.m., when his vehicle slid on black ice and hit a dirt embankment, which caused his vehicle to overturn, according to police.

A witness told a reporter the operator walked away from crash. Police said his hand was injured by glass.

Police said they charged Richards with aggravated unlicnesed operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with personal injury and operating with an expired license. He was released on an appearance ticket and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center with minor injuries.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
