The North Fork Animal Welfare League’s Southold shelter needs donations of tarps in preparation for this weekend’s upcoming storm.

“We need six more tarps for the storm alone,” shelter manager Gabby Stroup said. “They rip constantly, so we always need them.”

The tarps are used to cover the outdoor kennels in the winter months, protecting the enclosure from falling snow and wind. Stroup said she’s hoping to receive 10-15 tarps to last the shelter through the winter. The shelter also needs donations of zip ties, which are used to tie the tarps over the kennels.

Long Island was issued a blizzard watch this morning by the National Weather Service, which calls for heavy snow accompanied by strong and potentially damaging winds. Snow accumulations of 8 to 12 inches are forecast. The blizzard watch takes effect Saturday morning and will continue through Sunday afternoon.

After the storm settles on Sunday, the shelter could still use helping hands from the community.

“We always appreciate people coming down after the snow to help with snow blowing and shoveling,” Stroup said.

Tarps sizes 12×16 and 12×20 can be purchased at local hardware and dollar stores. Donations can be made directly to the Southold shelter at 165 Peconic Lane, Southold, or shipped to them at the same address.
