A winter storm warning remains in effect through 6 p.m. tonight.

Heavy snow will continue through early afternoon, with 15 to 25 mph winds and gusts up to 35 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Expected accumulations are from 5 to 9 inches. The heavy, wet snow and strong winds may bring down tree limbs and power lines, the weather service warns. Hazardous travel conditions are expected due to greatly reduced visibilities and significant snow accumulations. Near blizzard conditions are expected especially on the twin forks and on Fishers Island.

North Fork schools announced closings this morning. All Southold Town offices are also closed. See local list of closings, cancellations and delays here.

Light snow is expected to fall for the next four days, according to the weather service. Forecasters are keeping an eye on another low pressure expected to form off the mid-Atlantic coast today that will bring light snow into our area from late tonight into tomorrow night. This system could bring moderate to heavy snow to NYC and Long Island, depending on its exact track, NWS forecasters say.
