Southold Town officials formally thanked the 375th Anniversary Committee Tuesday afternoon at the town board meeting.
Councilman Bob Ghosio, the town board’s liaison to the committee, handed out certificates of appreciation to its members.
“We first got together around Thanksgiving in 2014 and we had a very animated discussion about the events we’d plan for the year ahead,” Ghosio said Tuesday. “It was really amazing what we were able to accomplish, starting with the kickoff celebration at Peconic Landing in January, which drew two or three hundred people,” he said.
“We also had a big parade,” Ghosio said. “These things don’t happen easily. This committee worked very hard.”
Ghosio thanked not only the committee but the people who volunteered at the anniversary events throughout the year. In addition to the Aug. 1 parade, the committee hosted “Mile Marker Day” on May 16 with a tour of the historic markers placed along postal routes in Southold Town. It also buried a time capsule at Silversmith’s Corner on Oct. 21.
On hand for the presentation Tuesday were 375th Anniversary Committee chairman Herb Adler and members Gail Horton, Walter Jackson, Mark Terry, Daniel McCarthy, Peg Murphy and Nicholas Planamento. Not in attendance Tuesday were members Geroge Cork Maul, Ruth Ann Bramson and Jim Grathwohl.
The certificate thanked the members for their “diligence and outstanding community involvement in planning and organizing the 2015 celenration of the 375th anniversary of the founding of the Town of Southold.”
The committee, in turn, gave the town supervisor, each member of the town board, the town clerk and town attorney a 375th Anniversary commemorative mug.
“The whole town board is very proud of the work you did,” Ghosio told the committee. “It was great to work with you.”
