Peconic Bay Medical Center, a new member of Northwell Health, opened a brand new non-invasive lab last month dedicated to detecting and treating vascular conditions . The lab was partially funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
Representatives from Peconic Bay Medical Center and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) formally dedicated the non-invasive vascular lab, an integral component of the Medical Center’s Vascular Program, on Thursday, January 28.
Vascular conditions disproportionately affect the elderly and diabetic, both of whom comprise significant portions of East End communities. Early detection and treatment—as provided by the Vascular Program—are crucial.
The geography of the East End of Long Island creates difficulty accessing the resources needed to treat these conditions. The next nearest vascular lab is more than 30 miles west of PBMC.
“With the generosity of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, Peconic Bay Medical Center is able to serve patients who in the past would often wait for their vascular conditions to become emergencies because of the unreasonable distances they had to travel,” said Dr. Steven G. Friedman, board-certified vascular surgeon and Director of the Vascular Program at the Medical Center.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation donated $277,000 to fund the build-out of the Vascular Program. The funds were used to renovate the space and purchase sophisticated equipment necessary for the non-invasive procedures.

Roula Siklas— Program Coordinator, Health and Sports, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation said, “the Foundation focuses on partnerships that positively impact vulnerable and underserved people.” She continued by saying the Foundation is ” happy to help bring critical services to the communities of Long Island’s East End.”
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation, founded by the Greek shipping magnate, has made grant commitments of $1.8 billion since its inception in 1996. A global philanthropic presence the Foundation has given 3,301 grants to nonprofit organizations in 111 nations around the world.
The SNF is one of the world’s leading private international philanthropic organizations, making grants in the areas of arts and culture, education, health and sports, and social welfare. The Foundation funds organizations and projects that are expected to achieve a broad, lasting and positive impact for society at large, focusing on vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly, and also exhibit strong leadership and sound management.
