Mattituck has never won a county championship for girls basketball, but if it’s going to be done, this may just be the year.

Today No. 1 Mattituck will face No. 3 Center Moriches in the Class B Suffolk County championship at Riverhead High School. Opening tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Head coach Steve Van Dood spoke very optimistically on his team’s chances in the big game following a blowout victory over No. 4 Babylon in the semifinals, 55-36.

“If we can get to the line and get some of their starters in foul trouble we should win the game,” Van Dood said. “But they’re a physical team. It’s all going to depend on how it’s officiated.”

The Tuckers have been pretty flawless all season, gathering an overall record of 17-1 to this point, only losing to Port Jefferson by one point.

“Honestly, that one loss I think was a blessing for us,” Van Dood said. “It made us seem human. It’s better to have that loss earlier in the season than say like in the playoffs.”

Mattituck swept the season series against Center Moriches. They won the first game 50-25, but their most recent victory was a much closer game, 59-51. You certainly can’t count out the Red Devils, who knocked out the McGann-Mercy Monarchs on Saturday, 46-35.

Led by Katie Hoeg and Liz Dwyer, the Tuckers will need a full team performance to come out on top. And Van Dood would expect no less.

“We have girls that can play up and down our bench,” he said. “Anyone can step up and we’re going to need someone to step up if they’re all over our two best.”

There’ll be a $6 admission to the championship.

Will the Tuckers make history?
