Ready for spring cleanup? The highway department will begin picking up brush and leaves in Southold on April 11. Pickup will begin in Laurel and move eastward to Orient Point.
Only brush and leaves will be removed. All leaves must be in biodegradable bags, without exception.
The town board approved the pickup Tuesday night. The board also authorized the acceptance of residential leaves and brush free of charge for five weeks at the Southold Town compost facility in Cutchogue. The free drop-off is available for homeowners who must have the applicable sticker.
The five-week grace period will start Sunday, April 3 and end Sunday, May 15.
Tip fees for brush brought in by commercial vehicles will be reduced to $30 per ton from April 4 through May 15.
Event permits approved
North Fork Little League Little League Mid-Season Classic and Parade in Peconic on Saturday, May 14. The parade will step off at 12 noon and march along Peconic Lane and Carroll Avenue to the ball fields.

Town seeks pump-out boat operators
Southold is looking to hire part-time pump-out boat operators for the period from May 14 through Oct. 30. The job pays $16 per hour. The pump-out boat operators will work under the supervision of the trustees. Contact the trustees’ office for more information: 631-765-1892
