Two men injured as they attempt to extinguish dryer fire in Mattituck

(Updated: March 26, 5 a.m.) A homeowner and his neighbor were injured as they attempted to extinguish a dryer fire in a house at 5779 Westphalia Road in Mattituck yesterday afternoon.

The homeowner, Christopher Durkin, 51, suffered minor burns to his head and neck while a neighbor, Robert Neudeck, 68, suffered smoke inhalation, according to a police press release issued late last night.

Durkin and Neudeck attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose, police said.  Both men were taken to Peconic Bay Hospital by fire ambulance.

Jamesport and Cutchogue Fire Departments assisted Mattituck Fire Department with the 12:08 p.m. alarm.
