Mattituck Boy Scout Troop 39 recently had three scouts honored for their outstanding spirit and service to Scouting and the community.

Joseph DePinto was the first Benjamin Tallmadge District recipient of the Suffolk County Council’s new District Spirit Award.

This award is given to a scout who shows the highest level of scout spirit both in and outside of Scouting. Joe serves as the troop’s senior patrol leader. In addition to being a very active member of the troop, Joe is an altar server at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, assists with meal preparations at “John’s Place” shelter administered by the Mattituck Presbyterian Church, has been recognized in 2014 and 2015 with the Mattituck-Cutchogue Character Education Award, and has embarked on a leadership program in the NJROTC classes at Mattituck High school. Joe continues to work toward his Eagle Scout rank.

The award was given at the Suffolk County Council’s March 31 fellowship dinner at East Wind in Wading River.

Mattituck Eagle Scouts Chris and Edward Merz were chosen by Suffolk County Council to attend the 2016 New York Delegation on Boy Scouting in Albany on April 6. This is an opportunity for scouts from each county in New York to talk to state officials about the scouting program and discuss with them why scouting is important to youths and the community. The scouts met with state lawmakers and a representative of Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“Troop 39 congratulates Joe, Chris and Edward,” said Assistant Scoutmaster Ed Thompson, who will succeed Scoutmaster Terri Boyle Romanelli next month.

Thompson is preparing to take Troop 39 on a hiking and camping trip at the end of this month. “We will be going to Boston to hike the Boston Freedom trail and camp at the BSA Camp Sayre in Adirondack shelters,” Thompson said.

Troop 39 meets at the Scouter Lodge on Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. located on Bailie Beach Road in Mattituck. “Any boy age 11 through 18 who likes camping, visiting fun places, and learning new things is welcome to come down and check us out,” Thompson said.
