The Southold and Greenport school districts are expanding their shared services initiative to include business office functions in a one-year pilot program announced today by the districts.
Following the retirement of Greenport’s business official, Diana Duell at the end of the current school year, Southold’s assistant superintendent for business Chuck Scheid will oversee the business office functions in both districts. Duell’s replacement in Greenport, who has not yet been named, will report directly to Scheid, according to David Gamberg, who serves as superintendent for both districts.
It’s a cost-saving measure, Gamberg said. If the pilot program proves to be effective and efficient, it could be implemented permanently, providing future savings to district taxpayers.
Southold and Greenport will now have four separate administrative functions that are shared: superintendent of schools, director of educational technology, plants and facilities administrator, and the business official.
The arrangement is one of the most ambitious on Long Island and even in New York State, Gamberg said.
Details of the arrangement are still being worked out between the two school districts, according to the superintendent.
