The Girl Scouts from Daisy Troop 261 planted flowers at Silversmith’s Corner on Main Road in Southold today.
The Scouts, ages 6 and 7, raised the funds to purchase the flowers— $65 in all — by collecting and redeeming deposit beverage bottles and cans .
Troop co-leaders Courtney Meringer and Diana Whitecavvage bought the plants and took the Mattituck-Cutchogue based troop to Silversmith’s Corner this afternoon. The girls worked diligently to plant the flowers for about an hour.
“The energy of youth,” Southold Councilman William Ruland said as he watched the kids work today. “It’s nice to see how much they’re enjoying this.”
The girls were not the least bit squeamish about all the earthworms they found in the fertile soil.
“The worms aerate the soil,” explained Vanessa Jiminez, a second-grader at Cutchogue East Elementary School.
“This was fun,” said Morgan Dunne, who also attends Cutchogue East.
Ruland thanked the troop for its efforts, noting that their work saved the town the cost of planting the public space so that it will be attractive all summer long.
“We really appreciate it,” the councilman said.
