Free six-week ‘Learn to Be…Tobacco Free’ class at ELIH starts next month

North Fork residents looking to quit smoking will have the chance for help from Suffolk County’s “Learn to Be …Tobacco Free” program with a free six-week course at Eastern Long Island Hospital beginning next month.

The course will take place on consecutive Tuesday evenings at the Greenport hospital from 6 to 7 p.m.: June 14, 21, 28, July 5, 19, 26 2016.  A class reunion will be held August 16, 2016.

“Breaking an addiction to nicotine can be very difficult,”  Suffolk County Health Commissioner James Tomarken said in a press release announcing the class. “Studies have shown that smokers who try to quit smoking using a combination of behavioral support and medicine are three times more likely to be successful than those who try to stop smoking without support.”

While the classes are free to Suffolk County residents, though there is a nominal fee for medication for medically eligible participants.
