Mattituck volunteer firefighters in dress uniforms gathered on a murky Monday morning for Memorial Day ceremonies at the war memorial monument on Wickham Avenue and Pike Street.

Misty skies gave way to a light drizzle as a wreath-laying ceremony got underway at about 8:15 a.m., led by Mattituck Fire Chief Eric Haas. Weather canceled the traditional parade this morning, but Haas said the department wanted to mark the day with the solemn ceremony. It had always been conducted by the Mattituck American Legion Post, Haas said, but dwindling membership in the post meant the fire department had to handle it this year.

A smattering of onlookers stood by to watch Second Assistant Chief Ted Webb and Lt. Ed Rittberg lay the wreath at the granite monuments on the green. Following a department salute, Webb dismissed the company and the brief ceremony concluded.
