Cops: Man rescues father and two small children from Peconic Bay after their boat capsizes off East Marion coast

An East Marion man rescued two small children and their father from the water after their boat capsized in Peconic Bay last night.

Southold Town Police said Salvatore Agosta of East Marion heard people screaming in the water at about 7:45 p.m. He called 911, got in his boat and and was able to pull the man and his 9-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter from the water. Augusta transported them to Klipp Park in Greenport, police said.

Gerlin Polanco, 36, of Westbury told police he was returning from a fishing trip with his children when his 20-foot boat began taking on water to the stern. Polanco said he lost power in the engine and the vessel eventually capsized from the water it took on.

Southold Police, East Marion Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard all responded.

Polanco and his children were transported by East Marion Fire Department Rescue to Eastern Long Island Hospital for evaluation.

The vessel was towed by Douglas Marine.
