Greenport High School held its 135th commencement exercises this afternoon, sending the 53 members of the Class of 2016 off to college, work and military service with words of wisdom, music and plenty of good cheer.
Superintendent David Gamberg, acknowledging the impacts of technology on modern life, urged the graduates not to lose sight of “another dimension of life” he said was essential: “taking the time to appreciate the simple things in life that make it worth living.” Whether enjoying the natural world or simple face-to-face conversation, these things “fill our souls with joy and purpose,” he said.
Commencement speaker Dr. Omar Armstrong, a 1994 Greenport graduate, told the class of 2016 to make new friends with like-minded people who share similar goals, to always work hard and place a high value on knowledge, “the basis for everything you need to do in life.”
