The Mattituck-Cutchogue Board of Education kicked off the 2016-2017 school year with its annual reorganization meeting Thurday night in the high school library.

In the brief meeting — it lasted only 11 minutes— the board appointed Catherine Gilliard as  district clerk and re-elected Laura Jens-Smith and Charles Anderson as president and vice president, respectively.

After a short executive session, the board returned for a regular meeting at 7:30. p.m.

Technology

Director of technology Geri Doherty gave the board a status update on her department. She announced a $273,511.00 Smart School Act allocation awarded to the district by the New York State Education Department to increase connectivity and security in its schools.

She says the department will use it to improve WiFi in the elementary school and to implement security upgrades, and hopes the program will approve of her plan in the upcoming month. According to a status update posted on the program’s website Friday, Mattituck’s award is undergoing “expenditure review.”

Personnel

The board approved personnel appointments for the 2016-2017 school year, including coaches for fall, winter and spring sports. Of note:

  • Patricia Arslanian was approved as the high school dean for the 2016-2017 school year.
  • Colleen McGowan was approved as the athletic trainer for the 2016-2017 school year.
  • Brian Bowie was approved to be a full time music teacher beginning September 2016.
