Firefighters snuffed out a smoky fire at First Baptist Church in Greenport early this morning.

Jeanette LaMothe wife of the pastor Tom LaMothe went to church to pray this morning at 8 a.m. and saw smoke coming out of a vent, so she called 911.

The church just finished a major renovation, she said.

Greenport Fire Department was assisted by East Marion and Southold fire departments. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, according to fire officials.

The fire started in the corner of the basement, near the electrical panel, Chief Wayne Miller said. The Suffolk County arson squad was called in to make a final determination, he said.

“When I arrived I saw smoke coming out of the side of the building,” Miller said.

The Greenport Village power department responded to cut electrical service to the building.
