Soaring temperatures and stifling levels of humidity have prompted the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory for all of Suffolk County today and tomorrow.

North Fork residents can expect heat index values to reach about 100 degrees Fahrenheit today and tomorrow afternoon. The heat index is calculated by combining temperature and humidity, which means that it will feel that it is about 100 degrees for several hours today and tomorrow.

In addition, a hazardous weather outlook for northeastern Suffolk County warns that any thunderstorms that develop today and tomorrow will be capable of producing localized flash flooding and “torrential” downpours.

A powerful thunderstorm earlier this week spawned a weak tornado in Mattituck, and heavy rains caused flooding throughout Southold town.

The heat advisory will be in effect until 7 p.m. tomorrow evening, with highest heat index levels in the mid to late afternoon. Seniors and those with chronic health problems should be sure to stay cool in air conditioning today.

Anyone working outdoors should schedule frequent breaks in a shaded or air conditioned environment.
