Sixth victim dies after Long Island Expressway crash in Manorville

A 71-year-old Westhampton woman has died following a horrific multi-vehicle accident on the Long Island Expressway in Manorville Sunday.

Helen Adelson, 71, succumbed to her injuries at Stony Brook University Hospital Monday afternoon. Her 81-year-old husband, Isidore Adelson, died this morning at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore following injuries from the accident.

She is the sixth person to die after Sunday morning’s accident. A 10 year-old Hicksville boy was one of the other victims who lost their lives in the crash.

Five others were transported to local hospitals to be treated for injuries sustained in the crash.

The accident occurred Sunday around 9:35 a.m., when a 26-year-old Hicksville man apparently lost control of his Subaru while traveling eastbound on the Long Island Expressway. The vehicle went airborne, crossed over the grassy median and struck two westbound vehicles, a BMW and a Honda, near Exit 68.

Carmelo Pinales, the driver of the Subaru, was pronounced dead at the scene, along with his 27-year-old sister, Patrica Pinales of Westbury.

His 10-year-old son, Christopher Pinales, was transported via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries last night.

Two other passengers in Pinales’ vehicle – Winnifer Garcia, 21, of Hempstead and the three-year-old daughter of Patrica Pinales – were transported to local hospitals.

Scott Martella, the 29-year-old Northport man operating the Honda, was also pronounced dead at the scene. His 29-year-old fiancé, Shelbi Thurau, also of Northport, was transported to local hospitals.

Helen and Isidore Adelson, the elderly couple who succumbed to their injuries Monday, were passengers in the BMW. The 73-year-old driver of the BMW, Marvin Tenzer, and another passenger, Sandra Tenzer, were also transported to local hospitals for injuries sustained in the crash.

Detectives are investigating reports that the driver of the Subaru was traveling at a high rate of speed.

All three vehicles will be impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives ask anyone with information regarding this crash to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.
