Southold animal shelter is seeking donations on GoFundMe to help an animal in need.

Wiskas, a 10-year-old cat who has been at the North Fork Animal Welfare League’s Southold shelter for five years, needs extensive dental work done to help alleviate discomfort from a gum infection.

“They’re suggesting putting her under and doing a dentistry. A lot of cats get gum infections and sometimes the antibiotics just don’t work. It can cause a lot of pain for the cat,” said shelter manager Gabrielle Stroup. “We’ve tried to make her as comfortable as we can but it’s time to take the next step.”

Wiskas is one of more than one hundred cats currently at the shelter. She came to NFAWL after he owner died in 2010.

“She’s a sweet cat, outgoing, always at the door to greet everyone — you never really know who’s going to get adopted and who is going to stay,” Stroup said. She has a cat at the shelter who came in as a nine-week-old kitten in 2007. “I can’t tell you why, some get adopted immediately and some stay with us for a while.”

Wiskas would do best in an adult home, but is friendly with other cats and would do well with dogs with a slower introduction, Stroup said.

An online campaign for Spudster, a dog at the shelter who needed surgery in 2014, raised more than $2,000 with 52 donors. Wiska’s surgery, which will remove some of her teeth, has a fundraising goal of $600.
