Southold police: Biker who eluded cops on chase and search turns himself in

A motorcyclist who eluded cops during a chase on Bergen Avenue in Mattituck June 27 turned himself in this morning, Southold Town Police said in a press release this afternoon.

Terrance Bennett, 25, of West Babylon, had been identified by police as the operator of a motorcycle who refused to stop for several patrol units, then lost control while attempting to negotiate a sharp curve on Bergen Avenue, causing him to lay down his bike, police said. Bennett then fled on foot and and evaded officers who chased him through farm fields, thick woods and brush, according to the police report A police K9 unit and helicopter were used in the search without result.

Officers recovered approximately one ounce of cocaine from the motorcycle, police said.

Bennett surrendered this morning and was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle third degree, reckless driving, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, and six other traffic violations, police said.
