LIRR restores partial service on Ronkonkoma, Port Jeff lines after derailment, but 14 rush hour trains canceled this morning

2014 0714 LIRR

Service has been partially restored on the LIRR Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson lines following a derailment Saturday night that knocked out service on the Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson branches.

MTA Long Island Rail Road crews have restored service to one of the two Main Line tracks east of New Hyde Park where the derailment occurred.

Because only one track is restored, customers are urged to consider using the Babylon, Hempstead, Port Washington and Montauk Branches this morning instead. Customers who do choose to use the Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma and Oyster Bay Branches should anticipate the potential for delays of 20 to 30 minutes and increased crowding.

The LIRR has cancelled 14 morning rush hour westbound trains that generally depart within 10-15 minutes of trains that will continue to operate, in some cases with added stops.

Cancellations on the Ronkonkoma Branch this morning:

· The 6:57 a.m. train from Farmingdale due Penn Station at 7:48 a.m. will be canceled. Customers will be accommodated by the 7:06 a.m. train from Farmingdale due Penn at 8:00 a.m. making added stops at Hicksville, Westbury & Carle Place.

· The 7:04 a.m. train from Ronkonkoma due Penn at 8:19 a.m. will be cancelled. Customers will be accommodated by the 6:56 a.m. train from Ronkonkoma due Atlantic Terminal 8:17 a.m. Transfer at Jamaica for service to Penn. This train will make added stops at Westbury and Carle Place. As an alternative, take the 7:32 a.m. train from Ronkonkoma due Penn at 8:47 a.m.

· The 7:19 a.m. train from Ronkonkoma due Penn at 8:28 a.m. will be cancelled. Customers will be accommodated by the 7:32 a.m. train from Ronkonkoma due Penn at 8:47 a.m.

· The 7:58 a.m. train from Bethpage due Penn at 8:53 a.m. will be cancelled. Customers will be accommodated by the 8:12 a.m. train from Bethpage due Atlantic Terminal at 9:01 a.m. Transfer in Jamaica for service to Penn. As an alternative, take the 8:22 a.m. train from Hicksville due Penn at 9:08 a.m.

Saturday night’s derailment injured more than 30 people. The cause of the accident is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.

“Commuters should be aware that as work continues to ready the second track and restore full service, the potential for delays does exist,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a press release issued early this morning.

The 5:30 a.m.  train from Greenport does not meet a train leaving Ronkonkoma that was canceled this morning.
