Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in the Jewish religion, begins at sundown tonight.
The Day of Atonement is observed through fasting, which is done to repent for the sins between man and God. It begins tonight at sundown and ends tomorrow at nightfall.
Yom Kippur is the culmination of the “10 days of repentance” that began on Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish new year.
Local services:
North Fork Reform Synagogue will hold services tonight from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m., tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The day will end with one last service at 6 p.m., followed by a fast-breaking dinner.
Congregation Tifereth Israel will hold services tonight at 6 p.m. and tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. The fast will be broken at 8 p.m.
Temple Israel will hold a service tonight at 6 p.m. and tomorrow, at 9 a.m. (with Yizkor following the Torah service), a study session at 3 p.m. and an afternoon service/Minchah at 4 p.m. The day will conclude with Neilah at 5:30 p.m., followed by a fast-breaking (reservations required).
