Katharine Schroeder joins LOCAL staff

schroeder_headshot-2Katharine Schroeder has joined the staff of SoutholdLOCAL, publishers Denise Civiletti and Peter Blasl announced today.

A North Fork resident for nearly 40 years, Schroeder was born in the Bronx and raised in Queens. After earning a bachelor’s degree in English at Stony Brook University and a master’s in elementary education at Southampton College, she taught at Greenport School for several years. She switched careers in 2005 when she was hired by actor Jackie Chan to document his life and travels through photographs and writings.

After living in Hong Kong for over three years and traveling extensively, she returned to the States and began working as a freelance photographer. She has photographed events, news, portraits, theater, and scenics on the North Fork since 2009.

“We couldn’t be more excited about Katharine joining our team,” Civiletti said. “Having made her home on the North Fork since 1977, and raised her family here, she knows the community inside and out. Beyond that, Katharine is a wonderful photographer and a gifted writer. She’s a delight to work with.” Schroeder has been working for the Local as a freelance photographer and writer for the past month. Previously, she did freelance photography for The Suffolk Times.

Schroeder, who has two adult sons, lives in Cutchogue with her dog Marley and her Amazon parrot Cookie.
