Suffolk grand jury indicts Southold man on rape and kidnapping charges

The Southold man charged with attempted assault, menacing and other charges last week after he allegedly tried to drag a woman into a wooded area in Greenport, as he threatened to rape and kill her, has been indicted on rape and kidnapping charges by a Suffolk County grand jury.

Jose Amadeo Perez, 38, was indicted Monday on first-degree rape and kidnapping charges.

Southold Police said Perez attacked a 27-year-old woman on Route 25 in Greenport at about 3 p.m. on Oct. 25. He held shears to her neck and dragged her into a wooded area, the woman told officers. She said she did not know her attacker.

Police, called by passersby who witnessed the attack as it happened, located Perez nearby and arrested him on charges of attempted assault, unlawful imprisonment, menacing and harassment charges, according to a press release issued the following day.

Perez is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Suffolk County Criminal Court. He is being held in lieu of $35,000 cash bail.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
