For a few hours on Friday evening hundreds of people had a chance to step back in time and experience an old-fashioned Christmas at the Southold Historical Society’s annual Candlelight Tour and Christmas tree lighting at the museum complex in Southold.

Children competed in potato-sack races and other games before lining up for a chance to sit on Santa’s lap in the Pine Neck Barn. Visitors toured the historic buildings at the complex and enjoyed demonstrations, displays and a taste of life as it was hundreds of years ago.

As the sun set, carolers Kathryn Zukowski and Dana Kowalsick set the tone for the highlight of the evening: the lighting of the Christmas tree. The crowd erupted in cheers as the switch was thrown, officially kicking off the holiday season.
