It was Liz Dwyer night in Greenport yesterday.
The Mattituck basketball star led her team to a 47-32 victory over Southold/Greenport and in the process scored the 1,000th point of her high school career.
Dwyer, a junior, passed the milestone on the second of two foul shots in the second half.
The teams were evenly matched in the first half, but the second half saw the L.I. champion Tuckers come out swinging, with Dwyer sinking basket after basket.
Two points shy of the goal, Dwyer stepped up to the foul line for two free throws. After sinking the first shot, Dwyer took a deep breath and put the second one in — and the Tuckers and their fans erupted in cheers.
She finished the game with a team-high 24 points and 1,002 career points.
Dwyer was presented with a jar of 1,000 peanut M&Ms and, from Coach Steve Van Dood, a basketball with her milestone 1,000 emblazoned on it.
Editor’s note: This article has been amended to correct the final score of the game, which was first reported as 47-38. An error in the kind of candy in the jar presented to Liz Dwyer has also been corrected.
