All aboard! A miniature train offering rides to kids of all ages in the Village of Greenport “is in the works,” Mayor George Hubbard said last night.

“We could maybe get a train ride back for next Halloween,” he told trustees during the village board work session.

Resident Frank Field has surplus equipment he’s offering to sell to the village and Greenport Rotary would like to get involved, the mayor said. Hubbard said he had “a good meeting” with Field and Rotary representatives about the project.

“It could be a neat addition up there on Moore’s Lane,” Hubbard said.

“I’m so excited to hear about the miniature train and Halloween again,” Fifth Avenue resident Chatty Allen said during the public comment period. “The little ones — they don’t understand and your face lights up when you talk about it,” she said. “They never experienced that.”

Field ran the Peconic County Miniature Railroad on a track behind his home from 1985 till 2012, when he ceased operating it as a public attraction.
