Mattituck defended its undefeated League VII record last night and handed Port Jefferson its first league loss with a 48-43 win at Mattituck High School.
Mattituck (6-0, 8-1) started strong but Port Jeff would not roll over, causing many turnovers and coming from a 12-point deficit to tie it up 21 all at the half on a three-pointer at the buzzer.
The Tuckers came out of the locker room invigorated and put up 18 points in the third quarter, scoring on steals and turnovers. They added another 9 in the fourth for a final five-point lead.
Liz Dwyer led Mattituck with 13 points. Jane DiGregorio followed right behind her with 12 and Mack Daly had 10.
The first-place Tuckers go on the road for two, traveling to Center Moriches (2-3 in League VII, 4-6 overall) on Jan. 10 and facing the formidable Pierson/Bridgehampton (5-1 in League VII, 9-1 overall) on Jan. 12. They return home Jan 17 to host Southold/Greenport. All game times are 6:15 p.m.
