Mattituck defeated Pierson 52-50 at Pierson High School.
It was a battle of two of the top three teams in League VII, both looking for the big win.
Mattituck was all business from the get-go as they applied precision passing, solid defense, and great ball control over an equally skilled Pierson team. They played a solid floor game, threading passes down low in the paint, making key three-point shots when needed.
Even thought it was a close first half, Mattituck took a 25-21 lead into the break. The second half found Pierson rejuvenated and they consistently traded basket for basket with Mattituck.
With about a minute left, Pierson (10-3, 6-3 in League VII) tied the score at 50, and the tension mounted as both teams traded up and down attempts to take the lead. But with 5 seconds remaining on the clock, Corrine Reda took the pass down low and put a driving layup in for the 52-50 lead. Pierson made one last ditch effort, but was thwarted by Mattituck, who took home a big road victory.
Mattituck, 10-1 overall, remains undefeated at the top of League VII.
Liz Dwyer had a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds. Reeda and DiGregorio both put 8 points on the board. Reeda had 12 rebounds.
Mattituck’s next game is is Tuesday, Jan. 17 at home against Southold/Greenport (6-5, 4-5). Start time is 6:15 p.m.
