The Tuckers traveled to Riverhead last night to hand McGann-Mercy a tough loss after the Monarchs made a powerful second-half comeback.
Mattituck arrived at Bishop McGann-Mercy High School minus their star player, Liz Dwyer, as she had a family function to attend. They had their work cut out for them as Mercy was well aware of that they were missing a key player.
Mattituck hit the floor, and controlled the first half of play against Mercy, stealing balls, hitting shots, and setting up plays. By the end of the first half, Mattituck had a convincing 25-9 lead.
The second half was a different song, as the Monarchs buckled down, and made a game out of it. Controlling the floor, making key steals, and sinking big-time baskets. Going into the fourth quarter, Mercy tied the score with about 5:50 left. With some back and fourth floor play, Mattituck was able to build a small lead, and pull out the win. Mercy held undefeated Mattituck to only 14 points in the second half, but came up short. Mattituck won 39-32.
Mattituck improved to 12-1 overall, 10-0 in League VII, behind Jane DiGregorio’s 14 points. The Tuckers’ next game is Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 6:15 p.m. when they host Babylon (5-9 overall, 4-6 League VII).
McGann-Mercy (6-7 overall, 6-5 League VII) travels to Center Moriches Tuesday, then hosts Pierson on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 6:15 p.m.
