The Suffolk County Historical Society’s is hosting a series of “Book and Bottle” events during February and March.

The series takes an informal, cozy approach to book discussion; participants not only share thoughts on the book choice, they enjoy wine and cheese when they gather together.

The upcoming events feature some thought-provoking works with subjects ranging from how to preserve the history of a local man who earned freedom from slavery to the women’s suffrage movement, to the story of a favorite community restaurant’s history.

Feb. 11, 2017 at 1 p.m. – Book and Bottle: Preserving the Legacy of Pyrrhus Concer with Allison McGovern and Georgette Grier-Key. Although Pyrrhus Concer is locally remembered as a freed slave who earned his freedom—as well as a whaleman, philanthropist, respected community member, and religious man—his historic homestead in Southampton became the center a heated two-year battle among local preservationists, planning board members, and developers. This visual presentation will focus on the community outreach effort, archaeological investigations, and plans for the future at the Pyrrhus Concer site as a cultural and education center. Members free; non-members $5. Includes light refreshments and admission to current exhibits. RSVP requested: 631-727-2881 x100.

March 18, 2017 at 1 p.m. –Book and Bottle:: Long Island & the Woman Suffrage Movement with Antonia Petrash. For 72 long years, American women across the nation fought a historic battle for the right to vote. Many remarkable women activists from Long Island worked tirelessly to protest and heighten awareness of inequality during this historically important civil rights movement. Join local historian Antonia Petrash as she shares the stories of these courageous Long Island women who fought for political equality for themselves and for future generations of women. Members Free; Non-Members $5. Includes book sale & signing, light refreshments, and admission to current exhibits. RSVP requested: 631-727-2881 x100.

Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 1 p.m. –Book and Bottle:: Ferry Tales II: When Hellenic Freezes Over with George Giannaris. Hellenic owner and author George Giannaris will sign copies of his new book and share the local history of his family’s landmark East Marion restaurant, along with coveted recipes, comical short stories, and his philosophical insights. Members free; non-members $5. Includes book sale and signing, light refreshments and admission to current exhibits. RSVP requested: 631-727-2881 x100.
