A winter storm watch for Long Island and the New York City metro area is calling for six to ten inches of snow Thursday, with locally higher amounts possible.
The storm is expected to hit late Wednesday night and bring heavy snow to the region through Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Though the storm will be fast-moving, it will bring heavy snow that will accumulate quickly, according to the weather service’s forecast discussion.
Temperatures will hover in the low 30s for the duration of the event – a stark contrast to Wednesday’s forecast, when the high temperature is expected to reach 56 degrees.
Blowing and drifting snow is also possible, according to the National Weather Service. Travel will be “hazardous due to snow-covered roads and poor visibilities,” the weather service wrote in its winter storm watch.
“A track near the 40n/70w benchmark along with strong lift aloft would put the heaviest bullseye right across the area,” the National Weather Service wrote in its local forecast discussion.
