Police: Mattituck teen airlifted after single-car crash while evading cops

A 16-year-old Mattituck youth trying to evade police lost control of his vehicle and crashed on Main Road in Peconic at about 8:20 last night, Southold Town Police said in a press release this morning.

Nicholas Alfano was airlifted by a Suffolk County Police Helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital for injuries police said are not believed to be life-threatening.

Investigators from the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit are assisting Southold Police in the accident investigation, according to the press release.

Alfano will be charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer as well as a number of traffic infractions including speeding and unlicensed operation, police said.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
