Mattituck lost to Sayville 9-8 in overtime in its season-opener league game yesterday at home.

After jumping out to a quick two-goal lead, Mattituck was playing well, just a step ahead of the Sayville defense, but Sayville was not about to roll over and let Mattituck run away with the game. Sayville clawed back and found holes in the Mattituck defense, which allowed them to take a 5-2 lead into the break at the half.

Mattituck came out in the second half determined to gain some ground, they scored a quick one to make it 5-3, but Sayville poured it on, netting another two goals to go up 7-3. Mattituck took a much-needed timeout, regrouped, and came back with three goals of their own to make it 7-6. Sayville netted another one to go up 8-6, and with the clock winding down, Mattituck knew it was do or die. Mattituck scored to make it 8-7, but the stunner for Sayville came with just 45 ticks left on the game clock, Chelsea Marlborough weaved her way into the Sayville zone, broke towards the crease, and scored the tying goal for Mattituck to make it 8-8.

As overtime began, Sayville controlled, then Mattituck had its turn, but Sayville got the ball back and with just 30 seconds left, scored the game winner to make it 9-8 Sayville.

Mattituck girls play their next home game on Wednesday, when they take on Islip at 5 p.m. at the high school.
