M&T Bank is closing six of its 16 branches in Suffolk County, including its location on Main Road in Southold, a bank spokesperson confirmed today.

The closures comes a little more than a year after M&T Bank merged with Hudson City Savings Bank and acquired 12 of its Suffolk County branches, including its location in Greenport.

M&T Bank will also close one other branch on the East End, located in Hampton Bays. The bank’s Riverhead branch will remain open.

“After having a year of experience serving our additional customers in Suffolk County and looking at the branch and ATM traffic patterns, we’ve determined 10 retail branches will be a good network size to server M&T’s traditional banking model in Suffolk County going forward,” said Chet Bridger, vice president of corporate communications at M&T Bank.

Existing accounts at M&T Bank’s Southold location will be consolidated into the bank’s Greenport branch, located at 73825 Main Road.

The accounts at the Hampton Bays branch will similarly be consolidated into the Riverhead branch.

M&T Bank acquired Hudson City Savings Bank in October 2015, and Hudson City’s Long Island locations began operating under the M&T Bank name in early 2016.
